Getting Insurance From the Minnesota FAIR Plan

Before submitting your application for Farm or Commercial coverage to the FAIR Plan, be sure to ask your agent to contact the MN Market Assistance Program.  The Market Assistance Program may be able to refer you to a Surplus Lines Carrier.

If you have been unable to obtain Homeowners or Dwelling Fire coverage from a private insurance company, you may qualify for coverage from the FAIR Plan.

Your Agent can assist you in the completion of the correct application form and gathering the other information that we need to process your request for coverage.  If you do not have an Agent, we strongly suggest that you contact one in your area for assistance.  You can find a listing of Insurance Agents in the Yellow Pages.

Having an Agent will help assure that your application will be properly completed, and contain all the necessary items.  The commission paid to the Agent for assisting in this process does not increase the premium charged for coverage.

If you prefer to proceed without the assistance of an Agent, you may apply directly to the FAIR Plan for coverage.  Go to the applications page, and select the correct application for the policy that you need.

Answer all questions on the application truthfully, complete all sections, and be sure to sign it.  In addition to the completed application form, you must include photographs of the front and back of all buildings and structures you wish to insure and documentation showing how the amount of insurance requested was determined, such as a building valuation worksheet.  If available, please include the Non-Renewal or Cancellation Notice you received from your former insurance company with your application for coverage.

Finally, your application must include the initial premium payment.  For Commercial and Farm policies the initial payment amount is $300.  For Dwelling Fire and HO-8 policies the amount is $200.  For Mobile Home Fire and HO-6 policies the amount is $100.  For HO-4 policies the amount is $50.  We will accept cash only if hand delivered to our office, and personally received by a member of our Staff who will provide a receipt for the payment.  Please do not mail cash.

We accept money orders, cashier's checks and personal checks.  We do not accept checks drawn on an Agency account.  All checks must be made payable to the MN FAIR Plan.  We do not accept third party checks.

Applications that are incomplete, do not include payment, do not include documentation showing the Actual Cash Value of the property, or are lacking any other information necessary to process, will be returned for correction.  Coverage will not be put in force until the corrected application is returned to our office, and is found to meet our requirements.
